Safety - a well designed holster will provide protection to the handgun during insertion into or removal from the holster or while being carried that will: 1. prevent accidental trigger movement; 2. prevent accidental disengagement of the safety mechanism; 3. prevent forward or rearward movement of the hammer. These features will vary greatly as applicable to the action of the handgun. The safety features of a holster very much require that the holster be engineered and designed for each specific manufacture and model of handgun.

AR-15 Accessories production was limited, though Guatemala, Burma, Italy, Cuba, Sudan and Portugal all purchased AR-15 Accessories rifles for limited issue to their military forces. Sudanese AR-15 Accessoriess were employed in frequent clashes with guerrilla forces and conflicts with neighboring countries, and a few captured rifles eventually turned up in unofficial service with various African and colonial armies, police, and guerrilla forces.[8] The AR-15 Accessories remained in service with Sudanese Special Forces until 1985. In 1958, a special 7.62x39mm caliber variant of the Sudanese AR-15 Accessories was produced in very small numbers for evaluation by Finland and Germany. That same year, a 16" barreled AR-15 Accessories was developed in response to a request by KLM Airlines for a carbine that could be issued to their crew for transpolar flights as part of an Arctic survival kit, and approximately 30 carbines were eventually produced.[9] A number of Transitional AR-15 Accessoriess were also fitted with a folding bipod designed to lie flat under the forearm.[10] The Italian Navy acquired the

The Ruger 10/22 is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle. It has a removable 10-round (or 5-round) rotary magazine which allows the magazine to fit flush with the bottom of the stock. Higher capacity magazines are also available. A magnum version, chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge, was made from 1998 to 2006[1], and a .17 HMR version, the 10/17 was announced in 2004, but this model is no longer in production.[2] The standard version has been in production since 1964.[3]

There is also a 22 inch stainless barreled version, without a barrel band around the stock, but Wal-Mart is the exclusive dealer for this model. The .22 Long Rifle version uses an aluminum receiver, while the .22 MAGNUM version uses a steel receiver with integral scope bases. Ruger also produced a 10/22 model with a mannlicher stock, although it has been discontinued.

Newer models have a "flattop" upper receiver with a Picatinny rail, to which the user can attach either a conventional sighting system or numerous optical devices such as night vision scopes.
The M16 utilizes direct impingement gas operation; energy from high-pressure gas tapped from a non-adjustable port built into the front sight assembly actuates the moving parts in the weapon. Combustion gases travel via a gas tube above the barrel directly into a chamber in the bolt carrier behind the bolt itself, pushing the carrier away from the bolt. This reduces the number of moving parts by eliminating the need for a separate piston and cylinder and it provides better performance in rapid fire by keeping reciprocating masses on the same axis as the bore.[citation needed]

Two common types of flash suppressors are the duckbill and birdcage suppressors. Duckbill flash suppressors have upper and lower "prongs" and direct gases to the sides. Early M60 machine guns and some early M16 models featured this type of flash suppressor. One disadvantage is that the prongs can become entangled with vines or other natural vegetation and objects in the field. Birdcage types still have prongs, but also feature a ring on the front to prevent vegetation from entanglement between the prongs. Another type of flash suppressor is a flash moderator, such as used on some CAR-15 models. An example of a cone-shaped hider is on the Bren machine gun and some models of the RPK and German MG3.

Meanwhile the layout of the weapon itself was also somewhat different. Previous designs generally placed the sights directly on the barrel, using a bend in the stock to align the sights at eye level while transferring the recoil down to the shoulder. This meant that the weapon tended to rise when fired making it very difficult to control during fully-automatic fire. The ArmaLite team used a solution previously used on weapons such as the German FG 42 and Johnson light machine gun; they located the barrel in line with the stock, well below eye level, and raised the sights to eye level. The rear sight was built into a carrying handle over the receiver.

Standard AR-15 rifles accept detachable magazines of widely varying capacities, and have a pistol grip that protrudes beneath the stock. AR-15 rifles are highly configurable and customizable. They are commonly fitted with several accessories such as bipods, collapsing stocks, threaded barrels for the attachment of a flash suppressor, and a rail system for the attachment of vertical grips, flashlights, laser sights, telescopic sights and other accessories.

Ballistic nylon is a thick, tough, synthetic nylon fabric used for a variety of applications. Ballistic nylon was originally developed by the DuPont corporation as a material for flak jackets to be worn by World War II airmen. The term ballistic nylon takes its name from the fact that it was intended to protect its wearers from flying debris and fragmentation caused by bullet or artillery shell impacts. It was not an effective defense against most pistol or rifle rounds. Ballistic nylon was succeeded by Kevlar and other, more effective, bullet resistant fabrics.[2]
Modern applications of ballistic nylon include luggage, cave packs, tool belts, police duty belts, watchstraps, motorcycle jackets, and skin-on-frame kayaks.

Comfort - ability to wear a gun for an extended period without excessive discomfort.

Finish - a well designed holster should not snag a pistol or excessively abrade its finish.

Draw ease - practical shooting holsters allow a gun to be presented quickly, but drawing ease is often compromised in concealed carry</p>

Still, for the intended self-defense application, over distances of only 3-7 yards (2.7 - 6.4 m), they can serve admirably. Despite the marginal power, many people carry mouseguns for defense, on the premise that a weak pistol you can easily carry/conceal is far better than a powerful gun you leave at home (because it cannot be easily carried/concealed). A mousegun is often the gun carried when one is carrying a deeply-concealed handgun, or it is the gun carried when one is ostensibly, by all appearances, not carrying. Additionally, the engineering required to build such a small handgun is admired by many, and there are thus many people who enjoy collecting and shooting mouseguns.

Featureless Rifle: If a rifle has none of the prohibited features (pistol grip, telescoping or folding stock, flash hider, grenade/flare launcher, forward pistol grip), the rifle may be used with legally-owned large capacity magazines. There are several products available on the market to configure featureless rifles. Special grips are available which prevent the thumb from going behind it as would be the case with a pistol grip configuration. They are therefore not a prohibited wrap-around style grip. Separate buffer tubes to contain the recoil spring and buffer assembly may also be used in conjunction with special stocks without prohibited grips or stock adapters which attach to the pistol grip mount.

m mousegun itself is not usually considered to be pejorative, but is instead affectionately used. Manufacturers of these guns however generally label them as "ultra-compact", avoiding the derogatory connotation given by users of larger-caliber, larger-size guns, and also differentiating them from "sub-compact" models such as the Glock 26 and 36, which have a similar role of deep concealment, but fire larger "defense caliber" cartridges between 9x19mm Parabellum and .45 ACP and are therefore slightly larger themselves.

Those who favor larger, heavier handguns (not necessarily of larger caliber) do often use the term mousegun for any small caliber firearm in a disparaging way, generally for guns they see as intended for use in a military or self defense role where power should be considered more important.

AR-15s to South Vietnam to let the allies test them. The reception was enthusiastic, and in 1962 another 1,000 AR-15s were sent to South Vietnam.[21] Special Operations units and advisers working with the South Vietnamese troops filed battlefield reports lavishly praising the AR-15 and the stopping effectiveness of the 5.56 mm cartridge, and pressed for its adoption. However, what no one knew, except the men directly using the AR-15s in Vietnam, were the devastating kills[22] made by the new rifle, photographs of which, showing enemy casualties made by the .223 (5.56 mm) bullet remained classified into the 1980s.[22]

In layman's terms, this report tells us that, statistically speaking, citizens who are openly wearing a properly holstered handgun and are willing to subject themselves to the intense public and law enforcement scrutiny that open carry brings with it are not criminals. [14][15]

A number of different flash hiding designs have been used. The simplest is a cone placed on the end of the barrel, which was used on the late-World War II jungle-combat versions of the Lee-Enfield, the No. 5 variant, intended for use in the Pacific. More modern solutions tend to use a "basket" with several slits or holes cut in it, as seen on the M16 and other small-bore weapons. Cone-shaped flash eliminators are also evident on the Bren LMG and on the turret-mounted aircraft machine guns of British WWII heavy bombers, which were used mostly at night.
Flash suppressors are often used as a muzzle brake as well by symmetrically cutting slits near the top - but not the bottom - of the hider, which then provides some downward-force on firing as the gases escape upwards, thereby reducing muzzle climb, as well as dust kick-up. This style of muzzle brake is commonly referred to as a compensator.

The magazine in a semi-automatic rifle is usually of a box-type which protrudes underneath the receiver and feeds cartridges vertically into the action. These may be fixed (as with M1 Garand, in which case cartridges are loaded from the top of the weapon, with the bolt locked back. Most modern designs use a detachable magazine, which is removed for reloading. Some detachable-magazine rifles, such as the M14, can also be top-loaded. Some designs use a horizontal tubular magazine similar to lever-action and pump-action weapons, which may be located underneath the barrel or in the butt stock.

The second method of operation, called direct impingement, is somewhat simplified. Here, the tube carrying the high pressure gas ported from the barrel emerges inside the action of the rifle, where it mates up with a "gas key" which is integral to the bolt carrier. Thus, the bolt carrier itself functions as a piston. The AR-15 and its military versions, the M16 and M4 Carbine, are the most common and well-known weapons which utilize this system.

Curtis LeMay viewed a demonstration of the AR-15 in July 1960. In the summer of 1961, General LeMay had been promoted to the position of USAF Chief of Staff, and requested an order of 80,000 AR-15s for the U.S. Air Force.[19] However under the recommendation of General Maxwell D. Taylor, who advised the Commander in Chief that having two different calibers within the military system at the same time would be problematic, President Kennedy turned down the request.[19] However, Advanced Research Projects Agency, which had been created in 1958 in response to the Soviet Sputnik program, embarked on project AGILE in the spring of 1961. AGILE's priority mission was to devise inventive fixes to the communist problem in South Vietnam.[20] In October 1961, William Godel, a senior man at ARPA, sent 10

    [edit]Summary

The M16A1 seen here fitted with a AN/PVS-2 night vision scope.
The AR-15 was first adopted in 1962 by the United States Air Force, ultimately receiving the designation M16. The U.S. Army began to field the XM16E1 en masse in 1965 with most of them going to the Republic of South Vietnam, and the newly organized & experimental Airmobile Divisions, the 1st Air Cavalry Division in particular. The U.S. Marine Corps in South Vietnam also experimented with the M16 rifle in combat during this period. The XM16E1 was standardized as the M16A1 in 1967. This version remained the primary infantry rifle of U.S. forces in South Vietnam until the end of the war in 1975, and remained with all U.S. military ground forces after it had replaced the M14 service rifle in 1970 in CONUS, Europe (Germany), and South Korea; when it was supplemented by the M16A2. During the early 1980s a roughly standardized load for this ammunition was adopted throughout NATO (see: 5.56x45mm NATO).

The standard 10 round 10/22 magazine stores the cartridges in a rotary fashion, rather than stacked, as seen in a box magazine. This allows the magazine to fit flush into the rifle without protruding from the stock at the natural balance point for one handed carry. The action of the rifle strips a cartridge from the magazine with each shot, allowing the next cartridge to feed into place.

As with all semi-automatic, centre-fire rifles, AR-15s are classed as a Section 5 weapon (i.e. a person must provide an exceptional reason and gain permission from the Home Secretary making ownership all but impossible for a private citizen) however AR-15s in a manually operated straight pull single-shot configuration or semi-automatic AR-15s that are chambered to fire a .22 rimfire cartridge are legal and can be held on a standard Section 1 Firearms Certificate. There are no restrictions on magazine capacities or 'assault weapon features' in the UK. There are a number of UK manufacturers of "straight-pull" AR-15 variants, the Bradley Arms BAR-15 being widely respected as it is becoming the competition AR variant of choice amongst the Civilian Service Rifle community. Southern Gun Company has tried to introduce a 9mm "self-ejecting" variant for gallery rifle shooting nicknamed the "Unicorn" but, despite numerous units being sold on the understanding the rifle was a fully compliant Section 1 firearm, the rifles were seized and subjected to stringent testing by the UK licensing authority's Forensic Science Services (FSS). A small number of pre-production models were found to be non-compliant with section 1 status. However, later models were deemed Section 1 compliant and were returned to their owners.

The MOLLE system was introduced in 1997. However it did not see widespread issue until after the September 11, 2001 attacks and was used by U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan and, later, Iraq. Early criticisms of the MOLLE system emerged, particularly from the Army. Most of these criticisms have centered on the sustainment-load pack and frame, due to the external plastic frame being too fragile and subject to breaking in the field (since mitigated), that the zippers have a tendency to burst when stuffed full, and that the pack's straps lack sufficient length to easily accommodate body armor.[3] Further, the first generation of this system utilized a "ball & socket" interface between the frame and rucksack belt (which in itself formed the waistbelt of the MOLLE vest). This interface method led to numerous lower back injuries due to the ball (mounted on the frame) missing the socket interface on the waistbelt and impacting the user's body. Subsequent redesign of the SDS MOLLE led to the deletion of this "feature" and thus the vest (FLC) and ruck/frame were separate non-integral items.

Under U.S. firearms laws, only the lower receiver of the AR-15 is considered a firearm and subject to purchasing restrictions. (This is not universally the case with rifles. On some other rifles, such as the FN-FAL, the upper is the serial-numbered part, and thus the firearm.) The upper receiver assembly is simply considered a part, and may be freely purchased and mail-ordered in most locations. This is a very attractive feature for enthusiasts, who can purchase a number of upper receivers (often in different calibers) and interchange them with the same lower receiver. However, one must be thoroughly familiar with firearms laws before doing this as it is possible to make a configuration that requires a special approval or tax stamp or a configuration that is illegal under state law.

For example, an 11" barrel with only a pistol grip is a legal handgun in most locations. Adding a shoulder stock to an AR-15 with a barrel shorter than 16"

    [edit]History

The AR-15 is based on the 7.62 mm AR-15 Accessories, designed by Eugene Stoner of the Fairchild ArmaLite corporation.[8] The AR-15 was developed as a lighter, 5.56 mm version of the AR-15 Accessories. The "AR" in AR-15 comes from the ArmaLite name. ArmaLite's AR-1, AR-5, and some subsequent models were bolt action rifles, and there are shotguns and pistols whose model numbers also include the "AR" prefix.[8]

The primary criticism of direct impingement is that fouling and debris from expended gunpowder is blown directly into the breech. As the superheated combustion gas travels down the tube, it expands and cools. This cooling causes vaporized matter to condense as it cools depositing a much greater volume of solids into the operating components of the action. The increased fouling can cause malfunctions if the rifle is not cleaned as frequently as should be. The amount of sooting deposits tends to vary with powder specification, caliber, and gas port design.
